What is the XRP Ledger?

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is an open-source, decentralized blockchain launched in 2012. It settles transactions in three to five seconds using a federated consensus protocol and is optimized for payments, tokenization, and cross-border settlement. Learn more at https://xrpl.org/.

Why does MEDBlock use the XRP Ledger?

MEDBlock Pay is built on the XRP Ledger because healthcare needs settlement that is fast, cheap, and provably final. XRPL settles in three to five seconds for fractions of a cent, which is well matched to insurance payouts, provider settlement, and cross-border medical payments.

How fast is XRP Ledger settlement?

XRPL closes a new ledger roughly every three to five seconds. Once a payment is included, it is final no multi-block confirmation wait. This is significantly faster than card networks (T+1 to T+3), ACH (1 3 business days), and SWIFT (1 5 business days).

What are XRP Ledger transaction fees?

XRPL transaction fees are typically a fraction of a cent (measured in drops, where 1 XRP = 1,000,000 drops). This makes small-value healthcare payments copays, micro-refunds, per-visit provider payouts economically viable in a way traditional rails do not support.

How is XRPL different from Ethereum?

Ethereum is a general-purpose smart-contract platform with variable fees and slower base-layer settlement. XRPL is optimized for payments and tokenization with fixed sub-cent fees and 3 5 second settlement. MEDBlock uses XRPL for payments and settlement, and Chainlink oracles to bridge verified off-chain data into contract logic.

Is using the XRP Ledger HIPAA compliant?

HIPAA governs how protected health information (PHI) is stored, transmitted, and disclosed. MEDBlock never writes PHI to the XRP Ledger the chain records only cryptographic hashes, consent events, and payment metadata. PHI stays in HIPAA-eligible encrypted stores. See our HIPAA compliant data platform page for the full control view.

Payment transactions (provider payouts, insurer settlement, patient refunds), tokenized value where applicable, and hashes of consent and audit events. Never PHI, never plaintext claim contents.

Do you also use Stellar (XLM)?

Yes. Stellar is used alongside XRPL for specific cross-border corridors and anchor networks where Stellar has stronger local liquidity. Both are payment-optimized ledgers with sub-cent fees and seconds-scale settlement. Learn more at https://stellar.org/.

Can XRPL handle cross-border healthcare payments?

Yes. XRPL was designed for cross-border value transfer and supports on-ledger currency exchange via its decentralized exchange. MEDBlock uses it to move payments across the US, Canada, UK, Germany, and other markets we serve.

Are XRPL-based payments regulated?

The ledger itself is neutral infrastructure. Regulated services money transmission, custody, on/off-ramps are provided by licensed partners (FinCEN-registered MSBs in the US, FCA-authorised firms in the UK, BaFin-licensed firms in Germany). MEDBlock Pay operates through those partners where regulated services are required.
